Energy Assistance
This quarter our Questions and Answers segment discusses assistance that is available to heating oil customers to help heat their homes this winter.
What assistance is available to heating oil customers who may not be able to cover the costs of heating their homes?
There are four different programs to help cover the cost of heating your home. The first and most robust of the programs is the Low Income Heating Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The second major program is known as New Jersey Shares. Other programs include Citizens Energy and People Help.
How does the LIHEAP program work?
LIHEAP is funded by the federal government and in many cases can cover the entire cost of heating your home for the winter. In order to be eligible for LIHEAP, your income cannot exceed 225% of the federal poverty level (approximately $48,000 for a family of four). Applications and additional information can be obtained from the Northwest Community Action Program (NORWESCAP) by calling 888-454-4778.
How does the NJ Shares program work?
NJ Shares is designed for income levels that exceed the level required for LIHEAP funding. The program provides heating assistance for families whose income is between 225% and 400% of the federal poverty level. Since 1998, NJ Shares has assisted more than 157,000 families with grants exceeding $57 million. Hart & Iliff is one of a limited number of fuel dealers in the state of New Jersey who participate in this program. It provides one free delivery during the heating season, up to a total cost of $700. This program is also administered by NORWESCAP. For more information, contact them at 888-454-4778.
How does the Citizens Energy Program work?
Citizens Energy is funded by Citgo and is run by Joseph Kennedy, son of the late Robert F. Kennedy. It offers temporary heating assistance to homeowners facing economic hardship in the form of 100 free gallons of heating oil. Applications are generally accepted between January 5 and February 28, or until the funds are exhausted. Citizens Energy can be contacted directly at 877-563-4645.
How does the People Help program work?
People Help is a Sussex County program that is a beneficiary agency of the United Way. Although People Help has limited funds, it offers temporary heating assistance for families or individuals in need. Their contact number is 973-729-1745.
Can I contribute to any of the programs listed above?
NJ Shares, Citizens Energy and People Help are all 501(c)(3) charitable organizations that would welcome your tax-deductible donations. Enclosed with this newsletter is a flyer for NJ Shares that was produced in conjunction with the Fuel Merchants Association of New Jersey and Verizon. On the back of the form is a place to sign up to make a charitable contribution. If you need help with any of these programs, call us at 973-383-1421.
